In a stained glass design, when the glass is cut it into the desired shape, the edges are ground down at the specific angle required, then polished for smoothness.

When the pieces are put together in a stained glass design, these angles come together and create texture and interest in the piece. And the angles also catch and refract the light differently than plain glass, creating prisms of color.
